When you set about cleaning your induction cooktop, you have to think of a few different types of cleaning. They can’t be cleaned the same way you clean and electric or gas cooktop. You have to consider regular cleaning, heavy-duty cleaning and cleaning the parts of the induction cooktop. We will take a look at all 3 here.
We will also let you know what not to do when cleaning an induction cooktop. Certain materials and cleaners will damage your induction cooktop so you will want to avoid them. Cleaning an induction cooktop isn’t difficult once you know what you are doing.
Regular Every-Day Cleaning of Induction Cooktop
As with any other appliance, if you keep up every-day cleaning of your induction cooktop, you will make your job easier later when you have to do a heavy-duty cleaning on it. When you are done using your induction cooktop, you will want to wipe it down so you don’t leave grease, crumbs or spills on it. Here are a few tips to your every-day cleaning of your induction cooktop:
- Wipe down spills, grease and crumbs with damp sponge or rag
- Use a very small amount of your favorite cooktop cleaner and wipe it with a paper towel or rag until stubborn spots are gone
- Gently dry your cooktop with a clean towel or rag

Heavy Duty Cleaning of Induction Cooktop
Every now and then, whether you want to or not, you will have to perform some heavy-duty cleaning on your induction cooktop. If you follow these steps, it won’t be as bad as you think.
- Use some white wine vinegar to remove any hard water spots from your induction cooktop
- For hard residue and stubborn spots, use a ceramic cooktop cleaner and scrub it with a cooktop cleaner pad. You can buy these online or in your local hardware store.
- Use a scraper to take off any chunks or hardened pieces of food. There shouldn’t be so many of these since you took our advice and did every-day cleaning. Don’t use the scraper too hard or you can scratch the surface of your induction cooktop.
- Use your favorite ceramic cooktop cleaner to clean the top of your stove. Use a new, fresh rag so it is nice and clean
- Wipe it down with a dry, clean cloth.
You can choose from different cooktop cleaners. Some that we recommend are Weiman’s Cooktop Cleaner or Magic Cooktop cleaner. They are also available at Walmart or any hardware store.
How to Clean your Induction Cooktop Parts
It is important that you know how to clean the components of your induction cooktop. For example, if you have a glass top, you need to clean it a certain way. Use a soft cloth with a cookware cream and rub it onto the glass surface. Then wipe it down with a clean, dry cloth. Repeat if necessary. Using a glass cleaner will not necessarily harm your induction cooktop. However, it won’t work as well as a cooktop cream.
If you need to clean the stainless-steel parts of your induction cooktop, you want to do so the right way. You really can get away with using soapy water. You want to be careful using a grainy product because you don’t want to scratch your unit. Once you wipe it down, use a dry clean rag to dry it off.
If you have any hard water marks, you can use white vinegar to clean it off. Most people don’t know this, but white vinegar is a great household cleaner. People have used it for years to clean appliances, floors and refrigerators. There are even people who swear by it for cleaning windows. So, it is perfect to use on your induction cooktop.
Melted Plastic and Sugar Spills
These are two of the hardest types of spills to clean off your induction cooktop. Nobody likes to smell burning plastic. And you want to keep your family safe so you don’t want sugar or plastic coating your stove. Most induction cooktops have safety features in place to make sure you don’t get burnt but still, you want to clean up these spills.
First, turn the stove and oven off. Then, using an oven-mitt or potholder, use your scraper to get the plastic or sugar scraped away from the hot components of your induction cooktop. Wipe off the scrapings with a paper towel.
Leave the rest of the spill to be cleaned up when the stove is completely cooled. As long as you get the sugar or plastic away from the hot part of the stove, it is safe to wait until the unit has completely cooled down before you attempt to clean off the rest.
Once it is cooled down, you just use whatever cooktop cleaner you prefer, spray a little on the top, and wipe off whatever is left of the spill. Dry with a clean, dry rag.
Am I Going to Scratch my Induction Cooktop?
A lot of people are wary of scratching their induction cooktop. This is smart. Once you scratch it, more than likely you will have to look at the scratches forever. It has been found that cast iron pans can indeed scratch your induction cooktop. A lot of people end up putting a thin layer of a barrier between the pot or pan and the burner. Some materials they use are:
- Paper towels
- Silpat mats
- Parchment paper
Just don’t use something that will create a mess on your stove like saran wrap. You want to remember, since induction cooking heats the vessel (the pot or pan) and not the burner, you will be safe using materials such as paper towel or newspaper as a layer between the vessel and the stove.
Keep in mind, it also isn’t a bad idea to use any of these materials (well, not the slipat mats) to clean your cooktop. Paper towel obviously works. But, so does parchment paper and newspaper. Newspaper is sometimes overlooked as a great rag.
What Not to Do to Your Induction Cooktop
There are a few materials and cleaner that you do not want to use on your induction cooktop. They will ruin and scratch the surface and you won’t be able to repair it. Here are a few that we recommend you stay away from:
- Brillo pads
- Comet cleanser or any granule type cleaner
- Dishwasher soap
- Rust removers
If you stay away from these products and follow the above steps, you can keep your induction cooktop stove in nice shape. It will be clean each time you go to use it. Your friends and family won’t have to worry that they’re eating food from a month before.
